Tips for Business

Easy green ideas for your business or office

  1. Turn off equipment when it's not being used. This can reduce the energy used by 25 percent; turning off the computers at the end of the day can save an additional 50 percent.
  2. Enable the “sleep mode” feature on your computer, allowing it to use less power during periods of inactivity.
  3. Encourage communications by email, and read email messages onscreen to determine whether it's necessary to print them. If it's not, don't!
  4. Reduce fax-related paper waste by using a fax-modem and by using a fax cover sheet only when necessary. Fax-modems allow documents to be sent directly from a computer, without requiring a printed hard copy.
  5. Instigate an ongoing search for "greener" products and services in the local community.
  6. Offset your greenhouse emissions. Much of our daily activity, be it working on a computer, driving to work or flying on a business trip, will generate greenhouse emissions. There are a range of schemes which can help you offset your emissions, such as tree planting, paying a little extra for your fuel to contribute to emissions reductions and purchasing energy from renewable sources. And remember the money you save becoming energy efficient can be reinvested to offset the emissions you do produce. There is also a growing competitive advantage to be gained from committing to sustainable business practices.
